On the “Inspire” Podcast, we had the pleasure of hearing from Devin Rubin of our newest partner, Golden Years Design Benefits. He shared his story of how hockey shaped his family and his career.
Devin discovered his love for hockey at a young age and began playing when he was five years old. He played all through his childhood. His mother, Golden Years President, Sunny Rubin, served as his chauffeur and head cheerleader.
When Devin was 13, his father passed away. His mom struggled to find work that allowed her to support her son’s athletic passion. As he tells it, the need for schedule flexibility is what led Sunny to the insurance field.
Devin says that his sense of discipline came from his experiences in hockey. He learned the importance of hard work and uses his competitive spirit to fuel his drive for success.
Devin played hockey through college, but he chose to shift gears and has been working alongside his mother for the last six years. When he’s not at work, Devin still gets out on the ice, where he coaches Jack, his 14-year-old son. And Sunny still makes time to support her athletes by being a proud “hockey Grandma.”
We love being reminded of what the best part of athletics really is: the values we learn along the way. Check out Devin and Sunny’s episode of the “Inspire” Podcast to hear more about their story.
